Based on the Greek myth of Persephone and Demeter, the play tells the story of a young woman taken to the Underworld and the ensuing demands of her mother—the goddess of the harvest—that she be returned. On another level, the myth helps explain why we have seasons, and the play explores the purpose of myths.

After Cronus was overthrown by his sons, his kingdom was divided among them, and the underworld fell by lot to Hades. There he ruled with his queen, Persephone, over the infernal powers and over the dead in what was often called “the house of Hades,” or simply Hades. He was aided by the dog Cerberus.

Hades then snatched Persephone from the earth and dragged her into the underworld with him. In Ancient Greek and Roman texts it is clear that Hades kidnapped Persephone against her will, and forcibly made her his wife.

Hades The God Following the overthrow of first the Titans and then the Giants by the Olympian gods, Hades drew lots with his brothers Zeus and Poseidon to decide which part of the world each would rule. Zeus received the sky, Poseidon the seas, and Hades the underworld.

After the Titanes were vanquished the three brothers, Zeus, Haides and Poseidon drew lots for the division of the cosmos. Haides received the underworld as his share.

Zeus whipped off his helmet and put in a ruby, a sapphire and an emerald. A sapphire to represent the earth and sky, and kingship over all the gods, an emerald to represent the seas, and a ruby for the underworld.

In the 1997 Disney film Hercules, Hades is banished from Olympus by Zeus for attempting to seize his position as the ruler of the gods. However, the original Greek mythology, Hades is not banished from Olympus. After the Titans are defeated, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades draw lots to determine who will rule what.

Zeus, in ancient Greek religion, chief deity of the pantheon, a sky and weather god who was identical with the Roman god Jupiter. His name clearly comes from that of the sky god Dyaus of the ancient Hindu Rigveda.
