In the Catholic Church, a Mass stipend is a donation given by the laity to a priest for celebrating a Mass for a particular intention. Despite the name, it is considered as a gift or offering (Latin: stips) freely given rather than a payment (Latin: stipendium) as such.

A Mass Intention may be set for: A deceased loved one. A living person who is sick or suffering. A living person who is celebrating a birthday, anniversary, or other special moment in their life.

He or she will then give the card to the recipient, which lets the recipient know that he or she or a deceased family member, or some other intention, will be prayed for at the Mass. The suggested donation for a Mass intention is $10, $15 with a Mass card.

And so parishes ask that when Masses are requested, a nominal donation be made to the parish as a sign of gratitude and support. The Mass has infinite value, and so no amount of money could ever be truly adequate, but a small donation is fitting and always appreciated.

If the person or family who requested the intention wishes to be present, then it is good that the celebrant mention the name of the person for whom the Mass is being offered. This may best be done either after the greeting at the beginning of Mass or as an intention of the prayer of the faithful.

This second intention, commonly called “the intention of the Mass,” are special intentions offered to God as prayers of intercession and thanksgiving in and through the Eucharist. Since the graces of the Mass being infinite, many intentions can be offered up at a single Mass.
