Practice making inferences through riddles, and challenge students by asking how many clues they would like to solve a particular riddle (e.g. I would like three clues). After presenting the designated number of clues, see if the student can solve the riddle.

How These Worksheets Work. Students are asked to do two things: answer questions that require making logical inferences and explain how they got their answers. Having students explain their answers helps to slow them down. It makes them think about what they are doing.

To make an inference, look at what the text tells you. Then, ask yourself these questions: Why might the characters act, look, think, or feel the way they do? What could have caused the scene or situation described in the text?

We draw inferences all the time when we say things like: “I don't see Anne. She said she was tired, so she must have gone home to bed.” “Sarah's been at the gym a lot; she must be trying to lose weight.” “Jacko is a dog, and all dogs love belly rubs. So Jacko must love belly rubs.”

People use inference all the time in daily life: it is the process of extrapolating information. For example, if it is the middle of winter and there is snow on the ground, one might infer that a coat is needed before going outside, as it is likely to be cold.

An inference is a guess that a reader makes by combining details from a text and personal knowledge. A reader makes an inference about what is happening. • A conclusion is a judgment about what something means based on facts and details.

Take a look at another inference example: Her face turned red....Inference Examples: 'She's making herself a snack, so she must be hungry. ' 'He's taken his coat, so it must be cold outside. ' 'They're an animal lover, so I bet they love cats too. '

I wouldn't eat after that two-year-old if I were you. Inference: The two-year-old probably did something gross to the food you were about to eat or has a cold and you could catch it. Something bad will happen to you if you eat the food.
