You Can Stay on Your Parents' Plan Until Your 26th Birthday The healthcare law requires insurers to allow young adults to remain on a parent's plan only until their 26th birthday. If you are younger than 26, you can join or remain on your parents' plan even if you are: Attending school.

When your child reaches age 26, he or she is no longer eligible to be covered under your health benefits enrollment, unless your child is incapable of self-support because of a mental or physical disability that existed before age 26.

The baby's delivery and childbirth care will be automatically covered under the mother's insurance policy. Insurers usually provide automatic coverage for a newborn for the first 30 days, and the parents are responsible for adding a newborn to their insurance immediately after the 30-day period.

Generally, you can join a parent's plan and stay on until you turn 26 even if you: Get married. Have or adopt a child. Start or leave school.

When Someone Turns 26. Your coverage will end on your 26th birthday. When you lose coverage on your 26th birthday, you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. This lets you enroll in a health plan outside Open Enrollment.

Depending on the type of insurance plan, 26-year-olds could lose coverage at the end of their birthday month or at the end of the calendar year. This cutoff is because of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which only requires health insurance providers to cover a dependent on a parent's plan until the age of 26.

Individual/Family Health Coverage - A form of health insurance designed to cover just one person (and often immediate family members), as opposed to someone covered by a group plan (see also Group Health Coverage).
