The Division of Professional Licensing, also known as DOPL, is one of seven agencies within the Utah Department of Commerce. DOPL's mission is twofold: protect the public and enhance commerce through licensing and regulation.

Security Guard License (Unarmed Private Security Officer) There are no required exams to be licensed as an unarmed private security officer in Utah. However, an 8-hours pre-assignment training course is required.

Utah licenses both security officers and security agencies. The Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL) recognizes three types of security officer: unarmed, armed, and armored car. Requirements include background check, training, and assessment.

Utah DOPL Requirements Once you have completed both the Unarmed & Armed courses and have passed each exam with a minimum pass score of 80%, you will be eligible to submit your application to DOPL to receive both your Unarmed and/or Armed Security Officer License.
