General Staff Overview As you previously learned, an Incident Commander is responsible for all incident management functions including: operations, planning, logistics, and finance and administration.

Command Staff: The Command Staff provide information, safety, and liaison services for the entire organization. General Staff: The General Staff are assigned functional authority for Operations, Planning, Logistics, and Finance/Administration.

The PIO interfaces with the public, media, various agencies, and the private sector to meet incident-related information needs. The PIO gathers, verifies, coordinates, and disseminates accessible,5 meaningful, and timely information about the incident for internal and external audiences.

The Public Information Officer is responsible for developing and releasing information about the incident to the news media, to incident personnel, and to other appropriate agencies and organizations. Only one Public Information Officer will be assigned for each incident.

A PIO should be involved in all phases of exercises: • planning; • development; • participation; and • evaluation.
