Group A bolts were A325 strength level and Group B bolts were A490 strength level. In the new RCSC Specification, the “Group” names now reflect the bolt unit strengths in ksi. For A325 strength levels, the bolts are Group 120; for A490 strength levels, the bolts are Group 150; and for F3148, the bolts are Group 144.

The Research Council on Structural Connections (RCSC) is a research organization focused on bolted structural connections. Their technical standard on this subject is cited in the US steel design code.

The RCSC Specification covers the design of bolted joints and the installation and inspection of fastener assemblies in structural steel connections. The document is maintained by RCSC with the participation of AISC.

The AISC Structural Steel Educational Council cites the following example: “If bolts are misplaced up to 1/2 inch, the oversized base plate holes normally allow the base plate and column to be placed near or on the column line. If the bolts are misplaced by more than 1/2 inch, then corrective work is required.”

In steel connection design, bolts are usually designed as a bolt group that will act as one body to resist a given load. The strength of a bolt group is usually calculated by the controlling strength of its most critical bolt.

AISC 348 : SPECIFICATION FOR STRUCTURAL JOINTS USING HIGH-STRENGTH BOLTS.

ASTM A325 bolts are assigned to "Group A" while ASTM A490 bolts are assigned to "Group B". ASTM A307 bolts are not assigned to a group since they are not considered to be high strength bolts. The ultimate tensile strengths for A325 and A490 bolts are 120 ksi and 150 ksi respectively.

The A325 bolt strength, or SAE grade 5 bolt strength, is usually used for structural bolting projects.

The Research Council on Structural Connections (RCSC) Specification for Structural Joints Using High-Strength Bolts provides state-of-the-art criteria for design and installation of ASTM high-strength bolts and assemblies.
