In geology, a lode is a deposit of metalliferous ore that fills or is embedded in a fissure (or crack) in a rock formation or a vein of ore that is deposited or embedded between layers of rock.

A lode is a metal-bearing deposit found embedded between layers of bedrock. Lode deposits occurring in igneous or metamorphic rocks commonly contain gold and silver, while lode deposits in sedimentary rocks often contain iron or uranium ore. The extraction process for lode deposits is hard rock mining.

Recording a Mining Claim To record a mining claim, the claimant must file a copy of the location notice of the claim in the recorders office in the county which the claim lies and with the BLM State Office in Sacramento within 90 days of the location of the claim.

Placer deposits are loose unconsolidated and semi-consolidated materials. It forms by surface weathering, erosion of the primary rocks, transportation and concentration of valuable minerals. Small deposits of gold, tin, diamond, monazite, zircon, rutile and ilmenite are common example.

Very generally speaking, placer mining involves sifting through gravel to separate the pieces of gold. Placer mining can be done by a single prospector with a gold pan. The process of lode, or hard rock, mining, on the other hand, is the process by which gold is extracted directly from the lode beneath the ground.

Lode claims are usually located as parallelograms with the side lines parallel to the vein or lode. Descriptions are by metes-and-bounds surveys (giving the length and compass bearing of each boundary line from a central point or monument to each corner post, and then sequentially around the perimeter of the claim).

The types of mining claims were either lode claims or placer claims. A lode claim is one which involves minerals found in rock veins such as tin, silver or gold. A placer claim is one with minerals not found in rock veins, but through means such as open pit mining or panning, for example.

Placers are a type of mineral deposit in which grains of a valuable mineral like gold or the rare earths are mixed with sand deposited by a river or glacier. Placer is also a mining method term. Placer mining uses water and gravity to separate gold from surrounding material.
