- Multiply Item 5 by 50% and enter the result in Item 6.
- Subtract Item 6 from Item 1a in Item 7. If the result is less than zero, enter zero.
- If Item 1b is zero, multiply Item 7 by 5% and enter that value in Item 8. Otherwise, leave Item 8 blank and proceed to Item 9.
- If Item 1b is greater than zero, multiply Item 7 by 6.25% and enter that amount in Item 9.
- If there are no QRET in one or more of the three preceding periods, skip to Item 10; otherwise, calculate credits in Items 10 and 11 as per the instructions.
- Complete Item 12 by entering the R&D activities credit from Item 8, 9, 10, or 11 as applicable.
- Document any carried forward R&D activities credits from prior years in Item 13.
- Add Items 12 and 13 to find the total R&D activities credit available in Item 14.
- Fill in the average number of research and development positions in Item 15.
- Lastly, enter the average salary for those positions in Item 16.
