The presence of dental caries in the primary dentition of young children is known as early childhood caries (ECC), which is defined as one or more decayed, missing (resulting from caries) or filled teeth in primary dentition in children of up to 71 months of age.

The Caries Risk Assessment Tool is a research-based tool used to identify the risk factors that cause dental decay. It is also used to provide recommendations to reduce the risk of future cavities.

The cause is usually inappropriate use of a feeding bottle or at-will breast-feeding or a combination of both, with or without poor oral hygiene. ECC was described as carious lesions affecting almost all teeth including the mandibular incisors.
