IED components can be sourced from conventional munitions, such as artillery shells, mortar bombs and landmines, which are found in government and non-state actor stockpiles and abandoned military positions, and in explosive remnants of war both in conflict areas and where active hostilities have ceased.

Explosives must contain a fuel and an oxidizer, which provides the oxygen needed to sustain the reaction. A common example is ANFo, a mixture of ammonium nitrate, which acts as the oxidizer, and fuel oil (the fuel source).

An IED is triggered by a firing system such as a pressure plate, mobile phone, radio, command wire or timer. A signal is sent to the initiator which activates the main charge. This can be artillery, grenades, mines, home-made explosives or combinations of several explosives or fuel.

Although IEDs can vary widely in shape and size, there are five components common to all IEDs which consist of the switch, the initiator, the main charge, the power source and the container.

Homemade explosive material can be made from everyday items. These include things like paint thinner, nail polish remover, fertiliser, bleach and hair dye.

Indiscriminate use or the targeting of the IEDs against civilians or civilian objects is strictly prohibited.

In practice, IEDs can be made of many different kinds of objects and materials, including artillery or mortar rounds, aerial bombs, certain types of fertilizers, TNT, and other explosives. IEDs can also contain radiological, chemical, or biological components to increase their lethal and psychological effects.

They are operated by means of movement. Switching methods include tripwire, pressure mats, spring-loaded release, push, pull or tilt. Common forms of VOIED include the under-vehicle IED (UVIED), improvised landmines, and mail bombs.
