Contact support

The dermis is a tough but elastic support structure that houses nerves, blood vessels, lymphatics, and cutaneous appendages (pilosebaceous units, eccrine and apocrine sweat glands). It is thicker (averages 1 to 4 mm) than the epidermis which is about as thin as piece of paper.

Dermis: The dermis is the inner layer of the skin that is 25 times thicker than the epidermis. Within this layer lies numerous blood vessels, lymph vessels, nerves, sweat glands, oil glands, and hair follicles. This layer supplies the skin with all of its oxygen and nutrients.

The deepest/innermost layer of the epidermis is the stratum basale. Histologically, the stratum basale is a single layer of cuboidal keratinocytes that directly abut and attach to the dermis. The two primary functions of the stratum basale are 1) proliferation and 2) attachment of the epidermis to the dermis.

What does the dermis do? It is the true skin, and is under the epidermis. It is a highly sensitive layer of connective tissue and is 25 times thicker than the epidermis. It contains blood vessels, lymph vessels, nerves, sweat glands, oil glands, hair follicles, and arrector pilli.

Skin is composed of three layers: (1) epidermis, (2) dermis, and (3) hypodermis. The outermost epidermis is separated from the dermis by a basement membrane zone, the dermal–epidermal junction. Below the dermis lies the subcutaneous fat (hypodermis).

The epidermis (ep-uh-DUR-mis) is the outermost and thinnest layer of the skin. It contains no blood vessels, but has many small nerve endings.

The dermis is about 10 times thicker than the epidermis, and contains large amounts of hyaluronic acid, which plays a role in preventing the skin from drying out.
