Dalton's Law of Partial Pressures allows a diver to predict how much of a specific gas will dissolve in her blood at a given depth. This is important, because some gases become toxic or cause mental impairment when their partial pressure in the blood rises above a particular level.

As he ascends to a depth with less water pressure, this nitrogen gas expands ing to Boyle's Law. If a diver does not ascend slowly enough for his body to eliminate this expanding nitrogen gas, it can form tiny bubbles in his blood and tissue and cause decompression sickness.

Henry's Law states that the solubility of a gas in a liquid is proportional to the partial pressure of the gas over the liquid. This is important to SCUBA divers, because more nitrogen dissolves in their blood when they breathe compressed air at depth.

What is it? Boyle's Law states that pressure and volume are inversely proportional when the temperature is held at constant. Decompression sickness is caused by the formation of bubbles of gas that occur with changes in pressure during scuba diving.

Cave Divers use a different Rule and that is the Rule of Thirds. 1/3 of the cylinder pressure to go out, 1/3 to get back to the exit and 1/3 as redundancy should something happen. They're not thinking about the dive time they're missing out on, they're thinking about safety and everybody coming back.

Boyle's Law: For a fixed mass of gas at constant temperature, pressure and volume are inversely related. Double the pressure and the volume is halved. As a diver descends, increase in pressure results in a decrease in gas volume (compression). Conversely, as the diver ascends compressed gas expands.

Boyle's Law is also important to divers because it means that if a diver takes a lung- ful of air while he is underwater, that air will expand in his lungs as he rises to the surface. If he holds his breath, or ascends too rapidly (like a cork) the expanding air can rupture his lungs.
