Vertical centrifugal pump Fluids enter the rapidly rotating impeller along its axis and are cast out through centrifugal force along its circumference through the impeller's vane tips. This action by the impeller increases the fluid's velocity and pressure and also directs it toward the pump outlet.

Vertical turbine pumps (VTPs) are a type of rotodynamic pump that use radial or modified radial flow impellers in a vertical configuration. VTPs are typically multistage pumps with several levels of impellers encased in a bowl assembly, and can further be classified as deep well or short set pumps.

The main difference between a turbine pump and a typical centrifugal pump is its impeller design. Compared to most centrifugal pumps, turbine pumps have smaller diameter impellers with rows of numerous small vanes. These vanes recirculate the fluid as it travels from the suction end to the outlet.

The first and most obvious difference is the orientation of the shaft. A horizontal centrifugal pump will have its shaft placed horizontally, typically between the bearings or overhung. Meanwhile, a vertical centrifugal pump has a shaft that is oriented vertically. The design of the shaft is radial split and overhang.

A multistage pump operates by one impeller feeding into the next impeller and the number of impellers required depend on the discharge pressure requirement. Liquid enters the pump and then passes through the various number of impellers in a sequence from the left to right.

These pumps work when water enters the pump through a bell-shaped part called the suction bell. It then moves into the first stage impeller, which raises the water's velocity. The water then enters the bowl immediately above the impeller, where this high-velocity energy is converted into high pressure.

All pumps use basic forces of nature to move a liquid. As the moving pump part (impeller, vane, piston diaphragm, etc.) begins to move, air is pushed out of the way. The movement of air creates a partial vacuum (low pressure) which can be filled up by more air, or in the case of water pumps, water.
