The Notice of Appearance is a pleading that is filed with the Court, stating that the defendant is appearing on their own behalf or represented by an attorney. By filing and serving a Notice of Appearance, a Defendant becomes entitled to notice of all subsequent proceedings.

Notices of appearance are typically filed by counsel for defendants who have not previously responded to the complaint or otherwise appeared in the action. However, attorneys recently admitted pro hac vice or joining a case as co-counsel for a party may also file this notice.

In legal terminology, a petition is made to the court by a petitioner against a respondent, while a complaint is filed by a plaintiff against a defendant. A petition asks the court to provide a court order, while a complaint seeks damages or to force the defendant to start or stop doing something.
