To buy a savings bond in TreasuryDirect: Go to your TreasuryDirect account. Choose BuyDirect. Choose whether you want EE bonds or I bonds, and then click Submit.

At a bank: If a bank cashes your savings bond, they are responsible for getting you a 1099-INT. They may give or mail you the 1099-INT as soon as you cash the bond or they may wait until the following January. Interest payments are made directly into your TreasuryDirect.gov account, if you use it to hold your securities. If you hold your bonds at a brokerage, then the interest payment will go there. The yield on 30-year Treasury bonds is around 3.90 percent, as of July 13.
