Legal documents already have a lot of legalese, so poor spacing can make it even more complicated. Most word-processing programs have automatic formatting for margins and spacing, but law firms can also set the margins manually. Ideally, the top margin should be two inches and the bottom margin should be one inch.

You'll want to start with a standard page size (8.5 x 11 inches) with 1-inch margins. Keep the font simple, such as Times New Roman, and avoid the use of color. Remember to break up text with headers and paragraphs for readability.

Legal documents typically use 1.5 or double line spacing to help add white space and improve readability. Using wider spacing also makes it easier to mark up draft copies, since you'll have room to write directly on the page. To set your line spacing in Word, go to Layout, then select Paragraph.

To apply character formatting in MS Word, the following should be used: The document's text should be selected. To access the Font dialogue box, select Format Font. Choose the necessary font from the Font list to change the font. Choose the necessary font style from the Font style list to alter the font style.
