Whoever took or owns the photograph still holds exclusive rights to its copyright, and you must ask them for permission before you can use it in any way—this includes printing, copying, displaying, or altering photographs.

Citing an image has nothing to do with fair use. Providing attribution for an artist or linking to an image offers you no protection against copyright infringement; it only helps you avoid plagiarism.

Copyright in photography means that you own an image you created. The law says you created that image as soon as the shutter is released. This means that photographer copyright laws state that whoever pushed the button owns the copyright.

Fair use allows copying of copyrighted material in an educational setting, such as a teacher or a student using images in the classroom. Fair use is flexible concept and can be open to interpretation in certain cases.

In addition to buying or licensing works (or some other way of seeking permission to use the work), you can also use one of the Copyright Act's exceptions and limitations, or rely on works in the public domain.

You can place the copyright symbol on any original piece of work you have created. However, it is important to note that adding the copyright symbol does not enhance your work's protection in any way. You are merely making a statement that you claim to own the copyright.

Protecting your works Keep proof of your work with times, dates and locations. Keep letters or correspondence of any agreements made about creation of material or ownership. Include a copyright notice on material as a visual reminder that your work is copyrighted. Add a watermark to identify your work.
