Nevada is not usually thought of as an oil-producing state but exploration for oil, which began 80 years ago, has been successful to a degree during the past 35 years, and oil fields in two valleys in interior Nevada are presently producing oil.

Natural gas fuels the largest share of Nevada's electricity generation, and 8 of the state's 10 largest power plants by capacity and 7 of the 10 largest by generation are natural gas-fired.

Nevada produces some oil, although total production is small relative to that of major oil states. Most of the oil has come from the Great Basin (Figure 1) in the eastern part of the state, primarily Railroad Valley (Nye and White Pine Counties) and Pine Valley (Elko and Eureka Countiess).

Nevada is a significant source of Lithium, Molybdenum, Diatomite and Barite. Other minerals/resources found in Nevada are Petroleum, Magnesium, Salt, Silica, Dolomite, Perlite and Specialty Clays. Nevada's Esmerelda County is home to the only producing lithium mine in North America.

Nevada does not have any significant crude oil, natural gas, or coal reserves and has no nuclear power plants.

The most prolific oil field in Nevada was discovered in 1983, when Northwest Exploration Grant Canyon No. 1 was drilled and completed. The Grant Canyon Field is in Railroad Valley, less than a mile east of the Bacon Flat Field.
