In Connecticut, adultery can play a role in how a judge decides alimony, but it's just one of many factors a judge considers, and the judge can decide how much weight to give it. Specifically, Connecticut judges must consider the following when deciding alimony: the standard of living during the marriage.

Estimate Alimony Payments. Common methods for calculating spousal support typically take up to 40% of the paying spouse's net income, which is calculated after child support. 50% of the recipient spouse's net income is then subtracted from the total if they are working.

In both states, the court must consider a list of factors in setting alimony amounts and duration, including the (1) length of the marriage and (2) parties' age, health, income, and employment. Connecticut considers marital fault and the status of the custodial parent but Massachusetts does not.

There is no way to accurately calculate alimony in Connecticut because of the many factors that family judges can consider when deciding alimony. Most importantly, each judge can exercise complete discretion when determining alimony, so, there is no consistent or reliable way to have an “alimony calculator”.

40% of the high earner's net monthly income minus 50% of the low earner's net monthly income. For instance, if Spouse A earns $5,000 per month and Spouse B earns $2,500 per month, temporary spousal support might be calculated as follows: 40% of $5,000 = $2,000. 50% of $2,500 = $1,250.

The guideline states that the paying spouse's support be presumptively 40% of his or her net monthly income, reduced by one-half of the receiving spouse's net monthly income. If child support is an issue, spousal support is calculated after child support is calculated.

Factors that can disqualify someone from receiving alimony in Connecticut include financial independence, remarriage, or cohabitation with a new partner. Additionally, if the court determines that the marriage was short or if both spouses have similar earning capacities, alimony may not be awarded.
