I've learned to run the baits during midday when bears are least likely to be at the bait. Contrast that to some of the wilderness bush areas of Canada, where bumping bears off a bait is often an everyday occurrence.

Remove any attractants such as garbage, pet food, bird feeders, or compost piles. Store food in bear-proof containers. If possible, close doors and windows to keep the bear away from your home. Consider using bear spray or noise deterrents (like air horns) if the bear approaches too closely.

Take a hunter education course – A hunter education course will teach you a lot about how to handle and shoot a weapon safely, hunting regulations, ethics, and even some tips and techniques. In Oregon, hunter education is required for youth under age 18, but we highly recommend it for new adult hunters, as well.

Hunter orange garments must be worn as the outer coverings and must be worn at all times while in the field hunting. Wear hunter orange so you can easily be seen and NOT mistaken for a deer.

It's the law when big game hunting, with a gun in most states, you wear Hunter's orange, or blaze orange. It's for your safety, so that you are visible to other hunters. Most big game animals, like deer, elk, prong horn, moose,and black bear, are color blind and do not see blaze orange the way that we do.

Typically, you can hunt small game without much hassle. However, if you are hunting big game, like deer or elk, you still need the proper licenses and tags. If you own or legally occupy land in Oregon, you do not need a hunting or trapping license for predatory animals, like coyotes.
