In a criminal trial, 12 jurors hear the evidence and decide if the accused person is guilty or not guilty. Before the jury makes their decision, the judge explains the law that they must consider when deciding the verdict.

Jury duty. Serving on a jury is one way a citizen can carry out his or her role. A jury is a group of citizens who try an accused charged with a criminal offence. In Canada, a criminal law jury is made up of 12 jurors selected from among citizens of the province or territory in which the court is located.

CACI (Pronounced "Casey") is the name of the Judicial Council of California Civil Jury Instructions, the official civil jury instructions and verdict forms originally approved by the council on July 16, 2003. "CACI" means "California Civil Instructions."

For jury instructions to be effective, they must be clear and simple. Sentences should be short; instruc- • tions should contain no more than a few sentences, cover only one topic, and be directly related to the circumstances of the case (they should not be abstract statements of the law).

The answer is simple: The law doesn't allow it. The lengthy instructions, which the judge read to jurors right before they started deliberating, are meant to serve as a road map and to help them apply the relevant law to the facts as they have found them.

You must decide this case based only on the evidence presented at the trial. You may not decide this case based on anything else.

Either before or after the closing arguments by the lawyers, the judge will explain the law that applies to the case to you. This is the judge's instruction to the jury. You have to apply that law to the facts, as you have heard them, in arriving at your verdict.

(B) "Special jury instructions," meaning instructions from other sources, those specially prepared by the party, or approved instructions that have been substantially modified by the party.

Most civil trials in New York use only six jurors instead of the typical 12 in a criminal case. In order to make a decision in a criminal case, jurors usually need to believe the case ?beyond a reasonable doubt,? and all 12 of them need to agree. In a civil case, the standard is much lower.
