For purposes of application of the guideline, a basic child support obligation shall be computed using the schedule set out below. For combined monthly gross income amounts falling between amounts shown in the schedule, basic child support obligation amounts shall be extrapolated.

Many different scenarios can create changed circumstances. For example, if the paying parent has had a large increase in income, the court can order the child support increased. Or, if the child's needs grow, such as if the child becomes ill or disabled, the amount of support can be ordered raised.

The amount of child support that has not been paid on time is called an ?arrearage? or ?arrearages.? More often, it's simply called ?back child support.? It can't be changed retroactively. Neither party can go back and undo, set aside, or change the arrearage.

Modifying Child Support One of the parents must request the change by a formal motion to the court. The court that makes the original child support award has the authority to modify the order if conditions change. Either parent may request the court to change the order throughout the time the child is under 18.

There is no statute of limitations on collection of past due support in Virginia. Parents are obligated to pay child support until a child reaches the age of 19 or graduates from high school, whichever comes first. Support terminates when the child turns 18 if the child is not in high school.

Virginia's child support guidelines use what's known as the "income shares model," which is meant to ensure that children have the benefit of both parents' earnings, and that the overall support obligation will be fairly divided ing to the parents' relative financial situations.
