The Constitution limits original jurisdiction cases to those involving disputes between the states or disputes arising among ambassadors and other high-ranking ministers. Appellate jurisdiction means that the Court has the authority to review the decisions of lower courts.

The Supreme Court also has appellate jurisdiction in cases involving questions arising under the Ohio or United States Constitutions, cases originating in the courts of appeals, and cases in which there have been conflicting opinions on the same question from two or more courts of appeals.

The court may grant leave to appeal criminal cases from the courts of appeals and may direct any court of appeals to certify its record on civil cases found to be “cases of public or great interest.” The Supreme Court makes rules governing the practice and procedure in Ohio courts.

To appeal a decision, a few documents must be filed with the trial court. These documents include the notice of appeal, praecipe, and docketing statement; they are described in more detail below. You must provide the trial court clerk the original document as well as a sufficient number of copies.

To perfect a jurisdictional appeal, you must file a notice of appeal and a memorandum in support of jurisdiction. A date-stamped copy of the court of appeals opinion and judgment entry being appealed must accompany your memorandum. To perfect an appeal of right, you must file a notice of appeal.

Rule 3 - Commencement of Action; Venue (A) Commencement. A civil action is commenced by filing a complaint with the court, if service is obtained within one year from such filing upon a named defendant, or upon an incorrectly named defendant whose name is later corrected pursuant to Civ.

Rule 3 - Complaint (A) The complaint is a written statement of the essential facts constituting the offense charged. It shall also state the numerical designation of the applicable statute or ordinance. It shall be made upon oath before any person authorized by law to administer oaths.
