The Need to Object to Bad Jury Instructions As a rule, legally erroneous instructions are presumably objected to by the opposing party. That's a standard for California courts. However, it's a good idea for the opposing party to put any objections to those instructions on the record.

Failure to complete and return a jury questionnaire, providing false information on the questionnaire, or using vulgar or profane language in response to a jury questionnaire subjects a citizen to show cause proceeding for contempt of court.

For jury instructions to be effective, they must be clear and simple. Sentences should be short; instruc- • tions should contain no more than a few sentences, cover only one topic, and be directly related to the circumstances of the case (they should not be abstract statements of the law).

Answer ONLY the question that is asked—do NOT include in your answer things that were not asked for. Consider the following question: "Are you involved with any law or justice-focused special interest groups, such as Black Lives Matter, Blue Lives Matter, etc.?"

If a judge gives the jury the wrong legal standards to apply or otherwise improper instructions, they may find a defendant guilty when they should have reached a different verdict. If the judge in your case gave the jury incomplete or incorrect instructions, you may appeal your conviction and seek a new trial.

Do I have to respond to the questionnaire? You are required by law to return the completed Jury Questionnaire to the court at 328 Washington Street. Failure to return the questionnaire will cause you to be summoned to court. Failure to respond to the summons may lead to your arrest and imposition of a fine or costs.

U.S. citizens at least 18 years old who are residents of the court district to which they are summoned. The jury pool for each court comes from a list of licensed drivers and state ID card holders in the court's district. Those who have been convicted of felony crimes are not eligible for jury service.

The full cooperation of every citizen is necessary if our system of justice is to function fairly and efficiently. You are required to answer and return this Qualification Questionnaire within 10 days after receiving it.

The states that expressly encourage judges to allow jurors to question witnesses are Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Nevada and North Carolina.
