When an NFL team cuts a player, he is either waived or released. A player who has accrued less than four years worth of seasons in the NFL is waived. On the other hand a player with four or more accrued seasons is released.

This means the waiver will process at the next waiver processing that is at least a full 24 hours (1 day) later. So, if you drop a player at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday, your waiver will run on or about 4 a.m. ET Saturday - the next scheduled running of waivers that is at least 24 hours past the time the player was dropped.

Waivers put temporary freezes on unclaimed players, giving everyone a chance to make a claim on them. When this time period ends, all waiver claims are processed and the manager with the highest waiver priority gets the player.

Teams do not lose priority after they make a claim. If the team with the No. 1 waiver priority puts in three waiver claims, they will get all three players. In fantasy football, most leagues have a system where if a team successfully claims a player, they are moved to the bottom of the waiver priority.
