There are two types of DNRs: a) hospital and b) non-hospital. What is a hospital DNR? Under a hospital DNR , the physician issues the DNR when you are in the hospital or a nursing home after you or your surrogate have given verbal or written consent to having a DNR in place.

Are There Different Types Of DNR Orders? Yes. There are two choices. You may be a DNR Comfort Care (DNRCC) patient or a DNR Comfort Care - Arrest (DNRCC - Arrest) patient.

The most important factor to bear in mind is that the law does not require a patient, or their family to consent to a DNR order. This means a doctor can issue a DNR order, even if you do not want one (see section on what to do if there is a disagreement).

The POLST, or physician orders for life-sustaining treatment, is a voluntary form with medical orders indicating a patient's wishes regarding treatments commonly used in a medical crisis. It is similar to the DNR order. It is for seriously ill or frail patients. The original POLST form always remains with the patient.

There are currently two types of DNR orders: 1) "DNR Comfort Care," and 2) "DNR Comfort Care - Arrest." Upon the issuance of either order, standard forms of identification are provided for in OAC rule 3701-62-04.

If you want to refuse CPR, you should ask your GP or the doctor in charge of your care to record this decision in a DNR form. You can only get a DNR form from your doctor.
