Like backups, Time Machine should automatically remove snapshots, but it's not always the case. It's quite normal for users to want to have manual control over what's on their device and when it's deleted, so here are a few tried and tested methods to help you remove snapshots.

There are two ways to recover files from your Time Machine backup: one is from the backup disk, the other is from the local snapshots, which are the backups Time Machine stores on your Mac and will help you recover your files when the Time Machine backup disk is not available.

If you have a file that existed unchanged for a long time and you delete it, it will exist in several long term Time Machine snapshots, and if you do not run out of backup space, it will be there in the oldest backup that still exists which included the file.

If you use Time Machine to back up your Mac, you can recover your files if your system or startup disk is damaged. Important: You must first re- macOS on your Mac before you can restore your files using your Time Machine backup.

Click General in the sidebar, then click Time Machine on the right. Click Add Backup Disk, or click the Add button (+). Select your connected storage device and click Set Up Disk.

Intel-based Mac Release Command-R when you see the Apple logo or a spinning globe. Type in your admin username and password. Follow the instructions on the screen to choose the backup time and date you want to restore from.

Recover permanently deleted files on Mac without Software: Launch Time Machine on your Mac. Find the deleted files you want to restore using the onscreen up-and-down arrows to locate them. Click the Restore button, and the deleted file will return to its original location.
