By default, Word documents are created with a single section and therefore any formatting will be applied to the entire document. But by inserting section breaks, you are able to split a document into two or more sections, which allows you to apply different formatting or page layout to individual sections.

A page break simply starts new content on the next page, while a section break offers more formatting options for the new section, such as different headers and footers, margins, and page numbering styles.

A page break simply pushes any information after that page break onto the next page; a section break essentially splits your document into different parts to allow you to apply complex formatting to your document. A section break should not be used instead of a page break in your document.

Section breaks create a barrier between different parts of a document, allowing you to format each section independently. For example, you may want one section to have two columns without adding columns to the entire document. Word offers several types of section breaks.

Word automatically adds a break at the end of each page. You can also insert a manual page break anytime you want to start a new page in your document. Put your cursor where you want one page to end and the next to begin. Go to Insert > Page Break.

Go to Layout > Breaks, and then choose the type of section break you want. Next Page Starts the new section on the following page. Continuous Starts the new section on the same page. This section break is particularly useful for documents that have columns.

Page breaks are used to end a page without filling it with text. To make sure the title page of your thesis/dissertation is separate from the signature page, for example, insert a page break after the graduation date on the title page.
