The temporary assignment of an employee from one organization to another for a specified period of time, usually to carry out a particular project.

For example, an employee at a machinery company could apply for a secondment at a supplier that makes machinery parts to understand the manufacturing and development process. Employees working a secondment are secondees. Secondees may stay in a different role on a project basis or over a set amount of time.

In a transfer, the employment relationship to transferred to the new employer (i.e. the original company is no longer the employer), whereas in a secondment situation, the employee remains under the employment of the original company but may perform work for the secondee company.
