Radio astronomy is conducted using large radio antennas referred to as radio telescopes, that are either used singularly, or with multiple linked telescopes utilizing the techniques of radio interferometry and aperture synthesis.

In order to make a clearer, or higher resolution, radio image, radio astronomers often combine several smaller telescopes, or receiving dishes, into an array. Together, these dishes can act as one large telescope whose resolution is set by the maximum size of the area.

With interferometry, radio astronomers can combine the signals from many antennas, and even many telescopes. It allows them to create an image that is much brighter and sharper than what is possible from a single antenna dish.

The principle of a radio interferometer's operation is the same as for an optical interferometer, but, because radio waves are much longer than light waves, the scale of the instrument is generally correspondingly greater. Parts of a radio wave reach the spaced antennas at different times.

The angular resolution of a radio telescope is to be 0.1?, when the incident waves have a wavelength of 3.00 mm. The minimum diameter (in m) required for the telescope's receiving disc (in m) is 1.05n.

Interferometry. As you can see, the resolution achieved by a typical radio telescope at typical radio wavelengths is not very detailed. To overcome this difficulty, radio astronomers use multiple radio telescopes at the same time, a technique called interferometry.

The high angular resolution of radio telescopes is achieved by using the principles of interferometry to synthesize a very large effective aperture from a number of antennas.
