Headings should follow a sequential, descending order, and shouldn't skip a level. Numbers are used to represent the heading level where 1 is the highest level and 6 is the lowest subsection. Most technologies, including screen readers, are limited to six levels of headings.

Highlight the text you want to turn into a heading or subheading and make sure you are on the Home tab. In the Styles section of the ribbon, click on the heading level you want. Heading 1 is typically used for document titles. Heading 2 is generally used for subheadings.

A heading is a word, phrase, or sentence at the beginning of a written passage that explains what it's about. A heading is very similar to a title. A heading is similar to a caption, a line below a photograph that briefly explains it.

There are five levels of heading in APA Style. Level 1 is the highest or main level of heading, Level 2 is a subheading of Level 1, Level 3 is a subheading of Level 2, and so on through Levels 4 and 5. The number of headings to use in a paper depends on the length and complexity of the work.

Styles are sets of formatting options (like font, line spacing and alignment) that you can apply to text in one click. This is more efficient than applying each effect individually, and also increases consistency throughout your document. Word contains nine built-in Heading styles named Heading 1 through to Heading 9.

Open your document that uses built-in heading styles, and select the first Heading 1. On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, choose Multilevel List. Under List Library, choose the numbering style you would like to use in your document.

It is recommended to use heading levels similarly to heading levels in a text editor: starting with a <h1> as the main heading, with <h2> as headings for sub-sections, and <h3> if those sub-sections have sections; avoid skipping heading levels. There is a good article on section headings here.
