To hide a column, right-click on its column title and choose Hide from the context menu. The column disappears from the display.

Try hiding fields when: You're trying to tidy up your view and only show necessary fields. You have computed fields or complex formula fields that don't need to be immediately accessible by editors and creators. You need to prevent people from seeing certain fields in a view share link.

Right-click any column header, and then click Unhide Fields on the shortcut menu. In the Unhide Columns dialog box, select the check box next to each column that you want to show, and then click Close.

If you want to make it inactive, you click on the field in design view, go to its properties dialog box, then click the Data tab, and select Enabled = No. This will grey it out.

All you have to do now is find the field you'd like to hide and click, hold, and drag it up to the box of fields at the top of the page (so that you see the green 2705 appear), then release. And you're all set, the field is now hidden from the page layout!
