There are 153 ZIP Codes in more than one state. There are 9,000 ZIP Codes in more than one county. There were 11,331 (out of the total 857,400) ZIP/sectors that were split by county. All states had some split sectors, with Virginia, Michigan and Ohio having an especially larger dosage.

There are no duplicate ZIP Codes. There are some ZIP Codes that are multi-part polygons, but those polygons are usually adjacent.

These should be placed on the same line as the street address. Place the city, state, and ZIP Code in that order on the last line. This must be the last line. Never place an ?attention line,? telephone number, or other entries after the ZIP Code line.

In the real world, ZIP code boundaries often cross county boundaries. This means that a particular ZIP code may lie in several counties. In fact more than 20 percent of all ZIP codes lie in more than one county.

The correct format for a numeric ZIP+4 code is five digits, a hyphen, and four digits. The first five digits represent the 5-digit ZIP Code; the sixth and seventh digits (the first two after the hyphen) identify an area known as a sector; the eighth and ninth digits identify a smaller area known as a segment.

ZIP Codes denote street address groups or delivery routes. Because of this, ZIP Code "areas" can overlap, be contained within another ZIP Code, or have no geographic area. For example, ZIP Codes that start with 095 are assigned to the Navy and therefore have no geographic location.

Delivery addresses do not require ZIP+4 Codes. However, ZIP+4 codes require an address to be first standardized and verified to exist. This means that an address with a ZIP 4 code can be sure to exist and therefore deliverable.
