The mobile phone has changed our attitudes and expectations. If people are late to a meeting, they are expected to notify others by calling on their mobile phones. Cell phones are creating a barrier to social connections because they are slowly replacing human interaction. Individuals in the same group would prefer to engage in chats instead of face-to-face communications. Mobile phone owners are often engrossed in their mobile phones while ignoring the people around them.

Speak softly. Be courteous to those you are with; turn off your phone if it will be interrupting a conversation or activity. Watch your language, especially when others can overhear you. Avoid talking about personal or confidential topics in a public place.

We feel unheard, disrespected, disregarded. A set of studies actually showed that just having a phone out and present during a conversation (say, on the table between you) interferes with your sense of connection to the other person, the feelings of closeness experienced, and the quality of the conversation.

This seems to me to be the biggest problem that phones create in face-to-face interactions. They make us less available to others by distracting us from important social cues, like that light in a friend's eyes when she has something important to tell us.

Decreased Communication Skills: Although cell phones also have opened the door to be able to communicate in different ways (text message, social media messaging, photos, etc.), they have also hurt live interactions because people are constantly on their phones or checking them which detracts from the present moment.
