When you're ready to introduce formula, offer a bottle of formula an hour or two after breastfeeding and then introduce an additional daily bottle-feeding session a few days later.

It's best to wait until about 12 months to stop giving your baby formula. Babies still need nutrient-dense food sources, though, and cow's milk is the best thing to transition to. But your baby's digestive system won't be ready until they're about 1 year old.

Start Small. If your baby is used to being fed when they're hungry, suddenly pushing back a feeding by an hour is just not going to work. That's why Parents recommended starting with small increments, pushing back a feeding by just a couple of minutes at a time at first and gradually building it up.

One-year-olds no longer need formula, and can now switch to whole milk. Some toddlers never drink milk; if that's the case with your child, please don't force it. Toddlers need the nutrients in milk ? calcium and protein ? but these nutrients are also available from other sources. Toddlers do not need milk.

Baby formula doesn't have to be warm. It's fine to feed your baby cool or even cold formula. It's all up to your baby's preference ? they may prefer it warm, at room temperature, or even chilled, and all of those options are just fine.

For the first 6 months, breast milk is all your baby needs to meet his or her nutrition needs. If you wean your baby before 12 months of age, be sure to give an iron-fortified formula. Breastfeeding should continue until your baby is 12 months old (and after as long as baby and mom would like to continue).

Starting with the morning feed, substitute the current formula with the new formula. Over the following days, slowly introduce the new formula until all feeds have been substituted, changing any night-time feeds last. The transition can take up to two weeks.
