Citizen and residency status: You must be a U.S. citizen or have eligible immigration status to be eligible for Section 8 in Tennessee. You must also live in Tennessee and plan to use your voucher in the state. Criminal background check: HUD requires that all Section 8 applicants undergo a criminal background check.

The SHAPE Program is designed to help you convert your Section 8 rental payment into mortgage assistance payments. The program will also help you to identify qualified mortgage lenders and to access down payment assistance programs. The mortgage subsidy can last for up to 15 years on a 30-year mortgage.

THDA administers the federally-funded Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) Program, which provides funding to local homeless housing providers for services to help Tennesseans who are at risk of homelessness or who are homeless quickly regain stability in permanent housing.

It may take from a few weeks to possibly a few years depending on available funding for Vouchers. Please do not call your THDA office to check your status. THDA is unable to give you a position number or estimated wait time to receive assistance.

Public Housing and Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8) - To apply for either type of help, visit your local Public Housing Agency (PHA). Some PHAs have long waiting lists, so you may want to apply at more than one PHA.
