Set Up Number Release For Free

When you release a number, Twilio will reserve that number for your project for 10 days in case you need it back. After 10 days, the number will be transitioned to the next stage of its lifecycle, where it undergoes a series of traffic and capability testing.

A verified phone number can be added to your account by submitting an HTTP POST request to the OutgoingCallerIds REST API resource. For full details, please see Add an Outgoing Caller ID (Twilio Docs).

Then navigate to the Numbers tab and click the phone number(s) you wish to delete. For each phone number click the "Release Number" link in the lower right and confirm your action. Please note that if you close your subaccount, all of the numbers in that subaccount will be deleted automatically.

Release a Phone Number via Console Access the Active Numbers page in Console. Click the desired phone number you wish to release. Click on the Properties tab under the number. Under the Actions section in the Release phone number box click Release phone number.

What happens when you port is that the current carrier who is keeping that number active (Verizon) approves your number to be released, or ?unlocks? it so that it can be transferred away, and the new carrier (Talkroute) takes the phone number and activates it again as the new carrier.

Releasing a number from a carrier's RespOrg does not mean that the number has finished porting. Once a number's RespOrg is released to Twilio, we must work with carriers to reconfigure the number for the new network routing before completing the final porting process.

Porting your US telephone number is a six step process that can take up to four (4) weeks depending on the type of number you are porting and the country the number is located in. The process includes coordination between our upstream provider and your service provider to transfer the number to Twilio.
