How do I Create a Footnote or Endnote? Using footnotes or endnotes involves placing a superscript number at the end of a sentence with information (paraphrase, quotation or data) that you wish to cite. The superscript numbers should generally be placed at the end of the sentence to which they refer.

When you go to Insert > Footnote, a citation number will be placed in the body of your document where you have the cursor. The number will also appear in the footer so you can type the citation's content beside it. A footnotes entered this way will only appear on that page -- it won't show up on other pages.

In a footnote referencing system, you indicate a reference by: Putting a small number above the line of type directly following the source material. This number is called a note identifier. It sits slightly above the line of text.

Click Insert and select Footnote. Click Symbol... to choose a symbol from the Symbol menu. You can choose any character from any font, though the "Symbols" font will open by default. By default, your footnotes will increase in number throughout your whole document.

Place the cursor where you want to add a footnote, and type a number or symbol, like "1". Select Insert > Header & Footer. On the Slide tab, select Footer, and in the Footer box, type the number or symbol you added in step 1, and then type the text that you want to appear in the footnote at the bottom of your slide.

The convention is to use an asterisk for this sort of note, followed by the traditional numbered footnotes. But if you don't want a reference mark, you don't have to have one.
