Most children begin learning to draw simple shapes and lines between the ages of two and five. Children first create these forms by imitating you, which means they observe you draw and then replicate the steps. Then eventually progress to just copying or drawing shapes they perceive without any guidance.

By age 3 drawing may change from simple ?mark making? to an attempt to represent something. A circle with two straight lines (for legs) commonly signifies a person. At this stage, many children will talk to themselves or others while drawing; some will start to ?name? their images.

Three year olds are able to make basic circles, crosses, dots, loops, and sometimes poorly formed squares. Their drawing of a person resembles a tadpole, with a large head and floating legs. Very little detail is added at this stage. They may be able to tell you about their picture, even if it is not recognizable.

Age two years is the start of controlled scribbling. Learners may be able to draw lines and circular loop strokes. They may be able to write a figure that looks like the letter T, but not purposefully intersecting lines yet. At this age learners understand that their movements are able to make marks on the paper.

By 2½ years, your child will start to draw people that resemble a tadpole/amoeba - with arms and/or legs attached directly to the face. The face may not have any features. By 3 years, your child will add features e.g. eyes and mouth. It is not until after the age of 4 that your child may start to draw a separate body.

At two and a half, children will start crossing midline and creating a horizontal line. At three years, they start to draw a full circle. At two and a half, you might see circular scribbles, but you see a perfect circle at three years. At three and a half to four years, they can make the two steps of the cross.

A 3 year old should be able to draw some representation of a person but that might just be a few interlocking circles. It's normally towards the end of the 3rd year that we see a simple drawing of a man coming together spontaneously. That might be a picture with around 4 body parts and proportions being off.
