If you attempt to remove a tick but its head or mouthparts are left behind in your pet, don't panic. You've killed the tick and removed its body, preventing any serious risk of disease transmission. The residual parts, however, could still lead to an infection at the attachment site.

Follow these steps:Gently pull the tick out with tweezers by grasping its head as close to the skin as possible.If the head remains, try to remove with a sterile needle.Wash the bite site with soap and water. Get your tweezers right down on your skin so you can grab as close as possible to the tick's head. Pull up slow and firm. Don't jerk or twist; a nice, steady pressure straight up will do. Clean the bite area again, and your hands, with rubbing alcohol or soap and water.

Clean the skin with rubbing alcohol. Use a sterile needle to uncover the head and lift it out. If a small piece of the head remains, the skin will slowly shed it. If most of the head is left, call your doctor for help.

Touching it with a hot match is a common one. Others include covering it with petroleum jelly or nail polish (in theory to suffocate it), or freezing it off. These are all supposed to make the tick back out of the skin on its own.

Besides looking awful, ticks can cause a reaction in the skin that leads to a small abscess, especially if not removed properly. In young animals a really heavy infestation could even lead to anaemia. But one of the main worries is the diseases that ticks can transmit.
