Place the cursor in the spot where you want to add a line. Click on Home (located in the upper left-hand corner). Look in the Paragraph section and click the down arrow next to the Borders button. Click on Horizontal Line.

Open your resume file in a word processor. Choose Select All from the Edit menu of your word processor. Select Copy from the Edit menu of the word processor. Click on your web browser to reopen it. Click inside the Resume text box. Go to the Edit menu in your browser and select Paste.

Open your resume in a word processor or text editor. From the File menu of the word processor, select Save As. The Save As dialog box will open. From the Save As Type drop-down menu (located at the bottom of the Save As dialog box) select Text Document or Text Only. Click Save.

If you have your PDF open in Adobe Reader, it's easy to select the text and copy it. Just drag to select the text that you want to copy and then choose Copy from the Edit menu. If you can't select the text, it may be that your resume PDF was created from a scanned document.

You need to avoid italics and underlining on ATS optimized resumes, as well as any other fancy formatting that is often used on traditional, human-reviewed resumes. You can, however type section headings in all capital letters and use bold font to highlight sections.

Line up all text to the left-hand margin. Replace bullets with symbols such as asterisks , dashes or plus signs ++. Use equal signs == to separate sections or place at least two lines of space between sections. Use CAPITAL letters for resume headings and job titles.
