You are required to obtain a Ship's Station License from the FCC and they will provide an MMSI number that is valid for international cruising. To obtain a Ship's Station License from the FCC, please visit the Ship Radio Stations page or call 877-480-3201.

The boating organization you use may require you to become a member before it will assign you an MMSI. Others, such as Boat US, assign MMSI numbers to non-members for a fee. However, if you're a member of the organization, you can get your MMSI number for free, as well as having access to other organization resources.

NOTE: The FCC currently charges $200+ for a ten year SA ship station license. Once you have completed the license application, it takes about 2 days for the FCC to issue the license. Your license will include a call sign and MMSI for your vessel.

The specific part of the FCC guidelines that regulate amateur radio are called the Part 97 rules. If you transmit on amateur radio frequencies without a license or break the Part 97 rules, you could be subject to massive fines.

If you're trying to register an MMSI number, you must visit the United States Power Squadron website as Sea Tow no longer provides MMSI numbers. Note: Federal users can obtain MMSI assignments from their agency radio spectrum management office in ance with Section 6.6 of the NTIA Manual.
