Emails are routed through to the IP address which is set in the A-record of the host. The A-record (or address-record) determines which IP address belongs to a domain name. This record 'translates' the domain name to an IP address.

It is not a strict requirement for a domain name to have an A record. An A record is only a requirement when you need your domain name to resolve to an IPV4 address. A quad A IPV6 is also an AAAA record that can be used to resolve a domain name to a server instead of using an A record.
