TIPS. Remember, a permit is "permission to mail," regardless of how you pay for postage. A "permit imprint" is a way of paying postage. Many mailers get a "permit" to mail with "permit imprint." To keep your permit imprint account active, you must do a commercial mailing at least once every 2 years.

Print the permit imprint on your mailpiece where a stamp would normally appear. The minimum size of the permit imprint is 1/2" square and not less than 6-point type.

Postage Paid Imprint is a pre-printed impression used on mail as an alternative to using postage stamps or a postage meter. It is suitable for customers who send regular quantities of mail.

Permit Imprints are a way to pay for business (also known as discount or bulk) postage. It is one of three business mail payment options, the other two being meters and precanceled stamps. Permit imprints are the only postage option that can ONLY be used for business mailing.

To use permit imprint, you set up a postage account (called an "advance deposit account") at the Post Office or Business Mail Entry Unit where you'll be depositing your mail. When you bring your mailing to the Post Office the total postage is deducted from your account.

Permit imprint is the most popular and convenient way to pay for postage, especially for high volume mailings. Instead of using precanceled stamps or a postage meter, the mailer prints postage information in the upper right corner of the mailpiece.
