Legally, a date is not required; if there is an expected timeline but a listed date is not on the contract, it is not considered enforceable. If the contract is undated but is marked as "for consideration," it is still valid. "For consideration" shows that each party has something to offer the other.

A contract does not need a date to be valid. Most times, it will simply begin on the day it is signed.

In the most formal writing, such as contracts, invitations, plaques and presentation documents, it is usual to write out the entire date in words. Days and months are capitalized, but dates and years are not. . . . on this sixteenth day of June, nineteen hundred and ninety-seven . . .

While a contract does not have to be dated in order to be valid and enforceable, it is a good idea to do so. Dating a contract will help you to positively identify it later if you need to and will help you place it in its proper chronological context.

Parties tell the court that they consider all time deadlines in a contract to be important by including what is known as a time is of the essence clause (TIOE) in their agreement. A TIOE clause tells the court that no deadline is too minor, and a breach of any deadline is a breach of the agreement.

In text, write out the full name of the month, followed by the cardinal number, a comma and the year. Although we read the day as though it were an ordinal (e.g., ?March 3rd?), write the day as ?March 3.? Use the ordinal only when the day appears without the year.

The contract date is important for two reasons. It is the date by which all specified information must have been provided to your customer. It is the base date for cancellation rights and the returns procedure.
