During summer months when school is not in session, 16 and 17 year old minors are not required to obtain work permits, provided that the employer maintains proof of age and a signed statement from their parent or guardian consent to their proposed employment.

8 hours of work per day, 40 per week are permitted when school is off. During a school week, 3 hours of work are permitted per day and up to 18 hours per week. For Minors Ages 16 and 17: Ohio has no restrictions on maximum working hours for minors aged 16 and 17.

This application should be completed by the student, the student's legal guardian and the student's prospective employer. The completed application should be submitted to the school in which the student is enrolled.

There is no official limit for the number of hours that a 16- or 17-year-old can work each week when school is not in session in Ohio. Minors who are 16 and 17 do not need a work permit for a summer job and do not have the same restrictions on hours.

Additionally, 16- or 17-year-old minors currently not attending school who have not met the requirements of graduation, or have not obtained a GED, or have not been emancipated by court order must secure a work permit from an authorized issuing officer.

Certificate of Age (for 16- and 17-year-old minors) No promise of a job is needed to obtain this certificate. The minor will be issued a Certificate of Age to use until age 18. There are no restrictions on hours except when the minor is required to be in school.

Regardless of where the child attends school (public, private or home school), the work certificate must be obtained from the superintendent or authorized designee of the public school where the child resides. Please duplicate these forms for use within your district.
