Massachusetts driver's license numbers consist of one letter and nine numbers. For example, S999888801. Michigan driver's license numbers consist of one letter and 12 numbers, unformatted. For example, P800000224322.

A black outline of a star in the upper right corner of the credential indicates the issued card complies with the federal identification standards. The BMV issues Real lD credentials only after the identity, Social Security number, lawful status and proof of Indiana residency of the card holder is verified.

Besides the black and white photo, the new license features raised text for touch and a mini portrait visible on both sides of the card. There are also new background images of the Statehouse and an Indy race car for a license or a cardinal for other IDs.

Driver's license cards will display a blue Indy car, and ID cards will display a red cardinal on the card face. Physically handle the bare card and feel for raised edges, glue lines or bumpy surfaces by the photo or birth date. Uneven surfaces indicate tampering.

Wisconsin's licenses and ID cards contain document numbers (circled) that are fourteen characters- one letter followed by thirteen numbers.
