Radio buttons, also called option buttons, let users select one option from a collection of two or more mutually exclusive, but related, options.

Radio buttons are a common way to allow users to make a single selection from a list of options. Since only one radio button can be selected at a time (within the same group), each available choice must be its own item and label.

Radio buttons have 6 states: default, hover, focused, read-only, and disabled. Note: When a radio button is in the read-only or disabled state, a user can't interact with the radio button. The read-only state is available for when you want to show the option, but not allow the user to change it due to their role.

When focus moves to the group in which a radio button is selected, pressing Tab and Shift+Tab keys move focus to the radio button that is checked. Up Arrow and Down Arrow keys move focus and selection. Up Arrow key press moves focus and selection forward through the radio buttons in the group.

Radio buttons ? are used when there is a list of two or more options that are mutually exclusive and users must select only one of them. Toggle switches ? are used when are two mutually exclusive options and always have a default value. Toggles selection takes effect immediately.

Instead of using the ambiguous terms ?radio button? or ?checkbox,? it's better to differentiate the two by using the terms ?single-select? or ?multi-select.? Single-select is for mutually exclusive items (radio buttons), and multi-select is for mutually inclusive items (checkboxes).

Checkboxes. Checkboxes, like radio buttons, present multiple options in a list. Unlike radio buttons, however, they allow you to choose more than one option.
