The approach taken by many photographers is to keep these files completely separate, and even create their own folder structure to accommodate them. Whatever you choose, at least create a dedicated folder for the edited/exported files in order to keep yourself organized.

The key to organizing your image collection is a simple and logical naming system. Start with simple file names that don't require a key to abbreviations. And make it a habit to import and rename images soon after a photo shoot or scanning session.

The format should be something like this: ?Photo by [artist name with their website hyperlinked]? or ?Image by [artist name] via [website hyperlinked].? For example, with this image from Flickr Creative Commons, it should be credited as ?Image by Shawn Arron via Flickr.?

There's no single right answer, and your naming system should be based on your specific needs. Each file name should convey enough information for you to easily determine what each photo is. You'll likely want to include the date and client name in each file. You may also add a descriptor for an event.

If you shot in raw (never give away your raw file) having the raw file will prove that you are the owner as the person you sold the JPG to would not have this. Also typically photos are not shot in isolation so having copies of the full series would be further evidence of ownership.
